Q: What is Advocacy?
A: An advocate is someone who is there to help you, to stand up for you in situations where you may need assistance.  EITSA has Student Advocates on both campuses to help you with problems that may be affecting your study:

  • Academic, course or enrollment dilemmas
  • StudyLink - your student loan or allowance
  • Personal issues - difficulty with another student or problem outside of EIT
  • Referral to free community services

All Advocacy discussions are strictly confidential.

Academic

Q: My class has been cancelled and I want to complain.  How do I do it?

A: Contact your Programme Leader. If you don't know who that is, ask at your school reception. If you would like to lay a formal complaint, contact us at the EIT Students Association, and we can take you through the process.

Q: I feel that I am being harassed by another student.  Can you help me?
A: Harassment is not acceptable, and EIT is opposed to any form of unacceptable behaviour.  Both the EIT Harrassment Contact Network and the Students Association are here to help you.  If you have experienced some form of harassment, you do not have to feel it is your fault.  You can do something about it. Contact one of the Harassment Contact People on your campus or the EIT Students Association.

Q: I got a mark for an assignment that I think is is unfair.  What should I do?
A: Each course has a different policy on having assignments reassessed. Refer to your course regulations (you should have received them as part of your Student Handbook) or ask your tutor or programme leader. Still having no luck or want some support? Contact us at the Students Association.

Q: I have been accused of plagiarizing.  How can you support me?
A: EITSA has Student Advocates on both campuses.  The Advocate can meet with you, listen to what has happened, and support you through the process.  The Advocate will explain EIT policies and procedures, and can attend meetings with you as a support person if you wish. Contact us to make an appointment.

Q: I missed a test.  Can I re-sit it? What are my options?
A: Approach your tutor first. If you have a genuine reason for missing the test or a medical certificate, then you may be able to re-sit the exam. Other options may be available.  Speak to your tutor or programme leader. Still having no luck or want some support? Contact us at the Students Association.
